Zone testing
Most of what is wrong with a large system is invisible from the controller screen and obvious in thirty seconds of moving water, which is why every job includes zone testing: running each station in turn while a technician walks it. That is how you catch the broken and misaligned heads, the rotor that has stopped turning, the coverage broken behind a shrub, and the low-pressure and mixed-head conditions that waste water steadily without ever tripping an alarm. The controller can tell you a zone drew the wrong flow; only walking the zone tells you why. We compare what we see on the ground to the controller's learned flow for each station, so the program and the physical system are describing the same reality when we leave.
Break and unscheduled-flow diagnosis
The signature advantage of a central-control system is that it can catch a failure by the water itself. A flow sensor at the point of connection knows what each zone should draw; when it measures more than expected, or any flow at all when nothing is scheduled, the system raises an unscheduled-flow or high-flow alarm and — configured correctly — closes the master valve to stop the loss. That is the system catching a mainline break or a stuck valve before it becomes a flooded street or an undermined slope.
The catch is that this only works if the flow sensing and alarms are set up and maintained, and on a lot of properties they were installed and never tuned — thresholds wrong, learned flows stale, master valve not wired to respond, alarms firing so often everyone ignores them. Our diagnosis works both ends: when an alarm has fired, we trace it to the actual break, stuck valve, or wiring fault, repair it, and confirm flow returns to normal; and when the flow protection is not doing its job, we set the learned flows, thresholds, and master-valve response so the next break trips the system instead of the water bill. This is the automated version of the leak isolation and meter testing we do by hand on systems without flow sensing.
Controller programming
A surprising share of "the irrigation is wrong" calls are programming, not hardware: a system watering a greenbelt at midday for a whole season, schedules that never got reset when the water district changed its watering-day rules, run times that drowned one zone and starved another, or a controller reset to defaults after a power event and never reprogrammed. We program and reprogram the full commercial lines above — stations, schedules, seasonal adjust and ET-based scheduling, flow configuration, and central communication — against your water district's current rules and the property's real conditions. How central control ties into AB 1572 reporting
AB 1572 prohibits using potable water to irrigate nonfunctional turf, and its self-certification for larger sites will require a property to demonstrate it has actually stopped — which is a water-data problem, and central control is where the water data already lives. A properly configured central system logs use by zone and by point of connection, supports the weather- and ET-based scheduling that documents efficient use, and shows the draw on specific nonfunctional-turf zones dropping to zero once they are shut off or converted. Instead of assembling a compliance case by hand, the board and manager can pull it from the system that was already metering the water.

Our central controller is showing a flow alarm and shut a zone down. What is happening?
A flow alarm on a central-control system means the flow sensor measured water moving that the program did not expect — either more than the running zone should draw, or flow when nothing is scheduled. On systems configured for it, the controller responds by closing the master valve to stop the loss, which is why a zone or an entire point of connection can go dark. That is the system doing its job: it caught a break or a stuck valve and cut the water before the bill or the slope did. The repair is to find the actual failure — the diagnosis is below — clear the alarm, and confirm the flow numbers return to the learned normal for that zone.
